Here's what free each day:

Introducing Safewaygirl notifications!

I've heard from a number of readers that they only go to Safeway when certain items are on sale, rather than shopping there on a regular basis. In fact, a recent conversation with my friend Audrey* went something like this:

Audrey: I love avocados! I just bought 10 from whole foods for $2 each.
Audrey's brother: Didn't you read Safewaygirl this week? They're only 50¢.
Audrey: Noooooooooooo.
Audrey: I wish Safewaygirl could send me an email every time avocados go on sale at Safeway.
Me: Sure I can do that.
Audrey: Yay!!!

So here we go. Check off any foods that you're interested in hearing about (or just sign up to get the Safewaygirl deals once a week) and let the even more effortless saving begin. You can turn off the notifications whenever you want.

Pick my Safewaygirl notifications!

This week's recipe: Hungarian Chicken Paprikash over pasta for $3.98/person (with sale items from Safeway)

This easy stewed chicken recipe, "Paprikash chicken" is a special one that my mother taught me :)  The version here is adapted from this book: Art of Hungarian Cooking.  Serve it over pasta and don't forget an orange (49¢/lb) for dessert!

Approximate total cost: $7.96 for two or $3.98/person + pantry items.

Chicken Paprikash
1 onion chopped
2 Tbsp. butter
1 Tbsp paprika
1 tsp. black pepper
2 tsp. salt
1 - 1.5 cups water
4 to 5 lbs chicken thighs or legs (only 99¢/lb!)
1/2 pint sour cream

Brown onion in butter, add seasoning and chicken; brown 10 minutes.  Add water, cover and let simmer slowly until tender.  Remove chicken; add sour cream to drippings in pan and mix well.  Heat through and serve with chicken over pasta.

Notes:
- Prices are for Safeway Dec 2 - 8th
- Calculation for 2 people: 4lbs chicken ($3.96) + 1 onion (~75¢) + 1 container sour cream (~$2) + 1 box pasta (~$1.25) = $7.96

Learn how to stock up on avocados

Posted via email from Safewaygirl's Safeway deals

Tip of the week: buying avocados

Avocados are only 50¢ each this week at Safeway, and as a huge avocado lover I always take this opportunity to stock up.

How do you stock up on fresh produce, you ask?  It's easy.

Avocados are ripe when they give slightly when squeezed.  You can easily speed up the ripening process by putting the avocado in a brown paper bag at room temperature.  You can easily slow down and nearly stop the ripening process by putting the avocado in the fridge.

For 2 - 3 weeks of ripe avocados:
1) Pick out avocados at a variety of ripenesses.  During this sale, there will probably be avocados both near the Safeway entrance as well as in the main produce section.  At the least, make sure most of the avocados are not yet ripe.
2) Place the ripest avocados in a paper bag on your kitchen counter.  Eat these in the next few days.
3) Place the rest of the avocados in your fridge.  Take out of fridge and put in paper bag 1-2 days before you run out of ripe ones.
4) Enjoy the 500 days of, er 21 days of avocados!!

Recipe of the week: Avocado and citrus salad for $3.53/person (with sale items from Safeway)

This salad is one of my favorites :)  I adapted it from this book: Absolutely Avocado.  I eat it as a light meal, but you can add chunks of chicken if you want something hardier.

Approximate total cost: $7.06 for two or $3.53 per person + pantry items.

1/4 cup olive oil

1/2 cup cider vinegar
1 Tbsp mustard
1 Tbsp fresh dill
2 large oranges 79¢/lb
1 grapefruit 79¢ each
1 purple onion, peeled ~$2/lb
2 avocados, diced: 50¢ each
1 head romaine lettuce: $1.69 each

Dressing: Combine olive oil, vinegar, mustard, and dill.  Blend well.

Peel the oranges and grapefruit.  Separate into segments and cut into bite-size chunks.  Slice half the onion into thin rings and dice the other half.  Place the oranges, grapefruit, diced onion and avocados in a bowl.  Stir the dressing and pour it over the salad.  Toss gently.  Season to taste with salt and pepper.  Line a serving dish with crisp lettuce and pile the salad in the center.  Scatter the separated onion rings over the top.

Notes:
- Prices are for Safeway Nov 11 - 17th
- Calculation for 2 people: 2lbs oranges ($1.58) + 1 grapefruit (79¢) + 1lb onion ($2) + 2 avocados ($1) + 1 head lettuce ($1.69) = $7.06

Safewaygirl tip: What 10 for $10 *really* means

Last weekend, what started as a Safeway shopping trip with a few friends for some dinner items (we were cooking together :) turned into a full-blown Safewaygirl lesson after I realized some of the rookie mistakes my friend Eddie was making.  The most outrageous mistake: if an item is marked something like 10 for $10, you can almost always buy just 1 or 2 at the same sale price!

An easy way to check is on the store tag.  If it says something like "$1 each", you're golden.  No need to buy a year's supply of pasta today, just to get the discount!

This always used to be true at Safeway, but recently they've been getting sneaky.  The main exceptions to this rule are:
- milk (usually need to buy 2 for the discount)
- frozen dinners (need to buy 5)
- 12 or 24 packs of soda (varies)

Other than that, there's no reason to buy the full quantity they suggest.  Don't get tricked into buying what you don't need!

If this tip helped you out, I'd love to hear :)  Happy saving!

Recipe for this week: Spicy Sausage and Shrimp Stew

I tried a new recipe from this cookbook on Monday and I thought it was a great warming, hearty stew for fall. And with sausage - the most expensive ingredient - at a great price this week, I figured it was a good recipe to share. I added some pasta (also on sale!) to make it more filling.

If you like getting recipe ideas here, let me know!

-------------------------
Spicy Sausage and Shrimp Stew

This is a relative of gumbo, but thicker and not so heavily spiced. I like the mild flavors of the white wine and thyme to be able to shine through.

3/4 pound spicy sausage (Safewaygirl says: sausage varieties are as low as 99¢/ package!)
3 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 medium onion, finely diced ($1/lb)
3 garlic gloves, minced
3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon ground cumin
2 teaspoons paprika
1 quart reduced-sodium chicken stock
1/2 cup white wine
1 cup chopped tomatoes (Green Giant canned vegetables 79¢/can)
15 grinds fresh black pepper
6 fresh thyme sprigs
15 shrimp, peeled and deveined ($5.98/2lb bag - you'll have extra! - on SAT/SUN)

Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Brown the sausage links as fully as possible on all sides. Remove and set aside to cool.

Reduce the heat to medium, melt the butter in the pan, and wait for it to start bubbling. Add the onion and garlic, and saute until the onion has softened and turns translucent. Add the flour, cumin, and paprika, and stir into the onion and garlic until the mixture becomes dry. Add the stock, white wine, and tomatoes and stir to incorporate well. Season with the black pepper and add the thyme sprigs. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook at a low simmer for 15 minutes.

Slice the sausage on an angle into 1/2-inch slices and add to the pot. Add the shrimp and cook 5 minutes longer.

Serves 6 - 8.

How to shop at Costco without membership

When an ex and I broke up I was initially bummed about (among other things) no longer being able to use his Costco membership.  I started wondering... should I pay $50 for my own membership?  Would I get enough use out of it?  But then I discovered, you can use Costco Cash Cards to shop at Costco without paying for membership!

Here's how it works:
1) Direct someone who does have Costco membership here.  A family member, friend, or anyone will do.  Have them buy you a Costco Cash Card aka gift card.  You can even have them ship it to your address.
2) When the gift card arrives, take it with you to Costco.  You show it at the door and at the register instead of a membership card.

And that's it!  The first time I did this I felt a little funny, but it has worked for me many, many times now.  And going over the value of the gift card doesn't seem to matter, they just have me pay the difference (cash, check, or AMEX only though!).

Sometimes my folks don't even ask me to reimburse them for the cash card, because they like the idea of me buying nutritious groceries (actually I'm buying discount movie tickets).  Happy Costco shopping!

Safewaygirl on SF Mission district blog

This post was randomly on the blog Missionmission (along with this photo of the Mission Safeway).  Guess people in the Mission like to save too!

Help Us Save, Safewaygirl!

I was alerted to this Safewaygirl’s Safeway deals blog today, which consists pretty much entirely of what’s on sale at Safeway, with enthusiastic commenteary interspersed.   I was initially ready to write it off as a snooze, until I noticed the 40¢ mac & cheese.  Stoked!

Other good deals, too, and nicely categorized. I tend to forget there’s a Safeway in the Mission, but perhaps I’ll stroll in this evening after work and – - OH NO I’VE BEEN VIRALLY MARKETED TO!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cucumber girl at Safeway

I've noticed that a lot of people get here by googling "safeway girl" (or occasionally "safeway grl" - I suspect these are the same people who play Typing Manic all day).  I tried it myself and came across this ancient craigslist missed connections ad.  Could you find not only deals, but true love at Safeway? :)

What to buy at Trader Joes

I know, I know, this is a Safeway blog.  But there are items that I always buy at Trader Joes because they're either cheaper at TJ, or unique to TJ.  I switch it up every now and then when Safeway doesn't have anything exciting on sale, when I want to support a fellow graduate of my college, or when I feel like a free mini-cup of coffee :)

Things I buy at Trader Joes:
Packaged and frozen indian food (unique)
Polenta (unique)
Half and half (cheaper than Safeway)
Wheat pasta (cheaper than Safeway)
Gourmet cheeses (cheaper than Safeway)
Chocolate covered x, where x is anything bite-sized. Favorite is chocolate covered edamame (unique)
Teas (unique & cheaper)

This week's receipt: Missed the FRI/SAT/SUN sales, forgot the coupons, but still managed to save 41%!

Best deal this time was the $1 cans of diced tomatoes. I stocked up on the ones that come pre-seasoned with basic, garlic, and oregano - I just heat them up and use them as a topping for pasta or polenta. So quick and tasty!
