I just tried this and it's super easy.  With a click of a button (and a twitter account), Amazon will automatically tweet for you, set up up as a follower of @amazonvideo, and put $5 of credit into your Amazon account for any video on demand or digital download purchase.  Completely free!  And you can always unfollow and delete the tweet after you get the credit.

Get $5 from Amazon

And today's deal of the day is the entire first season of AMC's new and acclaimed Walking Dead for only $4.99 .  So with the twitter deal it's free!

Save $15 + free shipping when you try Safeway delivery

If you're overwhelmed by shopping and parties and relatives overstaying their welcome this December, you might consider trying Safeway's home delivery service.  I haven't tried it yet myself but I have a few friends who swear by it.  Their delivery windows are as narrow as 1 hour.  It certainly sounds convenient!

Through Dec 31, they have a special deal for newcomers: Save $15 on a $50 order and get free delivery.  Use code CHEER at checkout.

Gifts from the Safewaygirl kitchen: Multipurpose magic spatula

Ok maybe not magic, but I absolutely love this spatula and use it for stir fry, scrambled eggs, or pretty much anything I've got going on the stove.  It doesn't melt or heat up if you leave it on the pan, doesn't scrape up the bottom of your nonstick cookware, and looks super stylish.

A many-purpose utensil I can no longer live without!

I found a few different colors and sizes on Amazon.  And they're currently part of their 4-for-3 promotion, which you can mix and match with lots of other Amazon products.

Cute (or manly) bedroom slippers: $7.89 total from kohls.com!

After several hours of parking and shopping craziness today, I decided to resort to online shopping... and came across this great deal on bedroom slippers!  I bought these cute ones, normally $20, for only $7.89 (including tax & shipping).

They are from kohls.com, and I used the promo codes:
twentcc (20% off)
FRECCDEC (free shipping)

According to slickdeals, all the following Dearfoam slippers are on sale for this price:

Coupon: $5 free at Hallmark stores through 12/5

Yup, Hallmark has put out a coupon for $5 off with no minimum purchase... so that's pretty much $5 free to spend on Christmas gifts, wrapping paper, cards, etc.  Sounds pretty good, huh?

They've got a surprising number of stores in the Bay Area, including Stonestown Galleria in SF.  For a complete list of locations, visit hallmark.com

It's only good through Sunday though, so no procrastinating!

Thanks, theFrugalFind.com!

Sweet nerd gift deal: buy 2 get 1 free Buckyballs

Several sets of these magnetic balls have been getting passed around at my work for months now and we (guys and girls, engineers and artists, old and young) all find them endlessly entertaining... enough so that my coworker was the one to forward this deal out to everyone (thanks, Drew!):

Now through Dec 4 at midnight EST, buy two sets of Buckyballs, get one set free!

They are even more fun and addicting than they look, I promise.  The gold ones look especially nice as a gift for your favorite nerd, relative-who-has-everything, or SO who needs some entertainment at work (don't we all, sometimes?)

Dec 3: Starbucks VIA 12-pack buy one get one free

This is part of Starbucks' 12 Days of Sharing (http://www.starbucks.com/share), and with some tech savviness (ok it wasn't that hard) I managed to figure out tomorrow's deal:

Buy a 12-pack of Starbucks VIA instant coffee and get one free.

When I clicked on the Find a Store button, the Safeway in-store Starbucks locations showed up so hopefully that means the deal is valid at the Safeway locations too.

Enjoy!

Lazy? Safeway's got a deal program for you.

Hate clipping coupons?  Hate waiting for your grocery essentials to go on sale?  Pretty much just want deals without having to do anything?  I know, I was skeptical too.

Safeway's all-digital (no more paper coupons!) "Just for U" program launches today in Northern Cali, and is already in Hawaii and Illinois.  I'm not a huge proponent of it just yet, but there's a big way to benefit from it.  Here's how to turn just 3 minutes of your time now, into months of savings without doing a thing:

Go to http://www.safeway.com/IFL/Grocery/Offers-Landing-IMG and click the register now button.  You basically just need an email address and your Safeway club card number or the phone number you use for your club card savings.

Under Personalized Deals, click view offers.  Go through and click add on every single thing.  This way, if you happen to buy any of these things, you'll *automatically* get this discounted price.  And these are supposed to reflect things you frequently buy on your club card, so you might find things that you'd actually use!  In 90 days the offers reset but you can just go through and add them again.  There's no limit on how many of these deals you can add, and if there happens to be a sale on that product, you get the lower price of the two.  There's pretty much no reason not to add everything.

Have another minute to spend?  Click on Coupon Center and add all of the coupons.  They are automatically added to your club card account so you don't have to do *anything* else to use them.  No bringing paper coupons to the store, etc.

If you click on the shopping list you can get a printable list of the sales you just added.  I find this helpful if you are a bit less lazy and want to actually seek out the sale items.

All in all, the "personalized deals" aren't as good as the weekly specials that I write about on Safewaygirl, but it's just so easy to get them that it seems worthwhile, just in case I need to buy that item when it's not on sale.  The biggest problem I have with it is that you can't tell which deals on your receipt were from this personalized deals program (the coupons do show up though), but hopefully that's coming.

Happy saving! ;)

The sign in my store says Sept 7th (see photo) so I suppose it varies by store or region.  Check your local Sfwy bakery department for the details and designs - some of the cake decorations looked spectacular!

Costco is also known for their inexpensive sheet cakes so they might be worth checking out too.  No Costco card?  Here's how to shop at Costco without a card.

$4.99 for deli sandwich + free 2nd sandwich coupon + free 20oz Coke

Decided to cash in on the Sfwy deli sandwich deal this week... and it's sweeter than I thought!  Through Tuesday, when you buy a deli sandwich you get BOTH a free 20oz Coke (or Sprite, or Dasani) AND a coupon for a free deli sandwich for next time.

Some tips:

1) Try the custom deli sandwich instead of one of the fancy named ones.  You get exactly what you want on the sandwich, and it's 50¢ cheaper

2) The coupon, however, can be used on any sandwich, so go ahead and get an expensive one!

3) If there aren't any Cokes left in the deli area, go to cold-beverage aisle to find one.  I believe any 20oz drink made by Coca Cola works (Coke varieties, Sprite varieties, Dasani water).

4) Make sure you get the discount when you check out!  It should be applied automatically when you swipe your Sfwy club card, and the cashier should hand you a paper coupon.

$2 Freddos at Peet's every Friday in July!

The deal I've been waiting for... all Freddos are only $2 on Fridays in July.  Time to sacrifice the diet for a glass of frozen sugar and coffee goodness.  And the chocolate that they use is fantastic.

They're all just $2 so be sure to get one that's normally expensive!  I'm going to try their new dark chocolate raspberry freddo which is normally like $4+ (gasp!).

And for your non-coffee-addicted officemates, they have tea and juice-only Freddos to choose from in most locations I've been to.

One more reason to love Fridays!

My Easter-week splurge

I have entered into a period of my life when I rarely eat chocolate that isn't dark, and certainly don't pay $3 for it.  But today at the Rivermark Safeway I ran into my newfound employee friend Robert over by the Easter display, and we chatted about our childhoods where we'd receive baskets filled with eggs and candy and toys.  Those, and that annoying plastic "grass" that we'd still be finding pieces of at Halloween.  Our conclusion?  It just isn't Easter without Easter chocolate (or Peeps, but nothing could put me in enough of a holiday high to buy a box of those!).

So here is my Easter 2010 treat: Egg-shaped Reese's.  Of course, there's no waiting for the easter bunny in this household.  I broke it open as soon as I got home :)

Happy Easter!

Recipe of the week: Portabella Mushroom Burgers w/ 99¢ mushrooms this week at Safeway

Pictured here (a bit blurily) with an Avocado and Citrus Salad.  Served with lettuce, tomato, and a fresh kaiser roll.  Also, instead of buying a big block of cheese, I just cut up a Lucerne pepperjack string cheese (only 33¢!) which was totally worth it.  If you missed the mushroom sale at Safeway, just go to Ranch 99, where the portabella mushrooms are always a good deal.  A tasty and easy weeknight meal!

Portabella Mushroom Burgers
Makes 4 burgers... which serves 2 very hungry guys :)
Ready in <30min

Ingredients
4 portabella mushroom caps - 99¢ each this week at Safeway!
1/4 cup balsamic vinegar
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 teaspoon dried basil
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1 tablespoon minced garlic
salt and pepper to taste
optional: 4 cheese slices

Directions
Place the mushroom caps, smooth side up, in a shallow dish.  Make sure the mushroom stems are removed so they lie flat in the dish.  In a small bowl, whisk together vinegar, oil, basil, oregano, garlic, salt and pepper.  Pour over the mushrooms.  Let stand at room temperature for 15 minutes or so, turning twice.
Preheat grill or shallow pan for medium-high heat.
Brush grill with oil.  Place mushrooms on the grill. Grill for 5 to 8 minutes on each side, or until tender.  Top with cheese during the last 2 minutes of grilling

Beware: Valentines day is coming to a Safeway near you

Holy molies that's a lot of red!  And that was only about half of it.  Captured today at the Rivermark Safeway, Santa Clara.

Obviously, Safeway wants to be a one-stop-shop for all your valentines needs.  Convenient if you are also cooking dinner for that special someone, I guess :)  Less convenient if you are boycotting the holiday like my "twin" Tina Fey on 30 Rock...

How to shop at Ranch 99, no Mandarin required.

Despite being white as can be, I navigate the aisles of my local 99 Ranch Market at least once a month, tiptoeing politely around the Chinese grandmothers and getting great deals on not only rice, sauces, and tasty asian foods, but on fresh fruits and veggies!  If you have ever made a stir fry, curry, or other asian-centric dish and did all your shopping at Safeway, you paid too much!

Here's the rule of thumb. It's not rocket science!
1) Anything that's remotely asian will be cheaper at Ranch 99.
2) Anything that you could only find in the specialty/international aisle at Safeway will be WAY cheaper at Ranch.  Stock up there.
3) Stick to Safeway for American brands.

Here's a comparison of just a few items that are cheaper at Ranch.

Items that always seem to be on sale at Ranch:
- 15lb bag of rice: $11.99 (at Sfwy: $18.98 for only 10lbs)
- Tofu package: 89¢ each (at Sfwy: $1.25 or more)
- Canned coconut milk 79¢ each (at Sfwy: $1.50 or more)

Normally priced items at Ranch:
- Red peppers: $1.49/lb (at Sfwy: $1.99 normal price)
- Portabella mushrooms ~99¢ each (at Sfwy: $1.99 each)

Ranch stores are all over California, and apparently also in WA, NV, and TX.  Locations

Finally, a warning.  They have lots of very fresh meats and seafood, but if you are used to Safeway packaging and animal-food abstraction like me, it can be a bit scary!  Fortunately, I've always found that Ranch rewards the adventurous ;)  Happy shopping!
