Recipe of the week: Portabella Mushroom Burgers w/ 99¢ mushrooms this week at Safeway

Pictured here (a bit blurily) with an Avocado and Citrus Salad.  Served with lettuce, tomato, and a fresh kaiser roll.  Also, instead of buying a big block of cheese, I just cut up a Lucerne pepperjack string cheese (only 33¢!) which was totally worth it.  If you missed the mushroom sale at Safeway, just go to Ranch 99, where the portabella mushrooms are always a good deal.  A tasty and easy weeknight meal!

Portabella Mushroom Burgers
Makes 4 burgers... which serves 2 very hungry guys :)
Ready in <30min

Ingredients
4 portabella mushroom caps - 99¢ each this week at Safeway!
1/4 cup balsamic vinegar
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 teaspoon dried basil
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1 tablespoon minced garlic
salt and pepper to taste
optional: 4 cheese slices

Directions
Place the mushroom caps, smooth side up, in a shallow dish.  Make sure the mushroom stems are removed so they lie flat in the dish.  In a small bowl, whisk together vinegar, oil, basil, oregano, garlic, salt and pepper.  Pour over the mushrooms.  Let stand at room temperature for 15 minutes or so, turning twice.
Preheat grill or shallow pan for medium-high heat.
Brush grill with oil.  Place mushrooms on the grill. Grill for 5 to 8 minutes on each side, or until tender.  Top with cheese during the last 2 minutes of grilling

Beware: Valentines day is coming to a Safeway near you

Holy molies that's a lot of red!  And that was only about half of it.  Captured today at the Rivermark Safeway, Santa Clara.

Obviously, Safeway wants to be a one-stop-shop for all your valentines needs.  Convenient if you are also cooking dinner for that special someone, I guess :)  Less convenient if you are boycotting the holiday like my "twin" Tina Fey on 30 Rock...

How to shop at Ranch 99, no Mandarin required.

Despite being white as can be, I navigate the aisles of my local 99 Ranch Market at least once a month, tiptoeing politely around the Chinese grandmothers and getting great deals on not only rice, sauces, and tasty asian foods, but on fresh fruits and veggies!  If you have ever made a stir fry, curry, or other asian-centric dish and did all your shopping at Safeway, you paid too much!

Here's the rule of thumb. It's not rocket science!
1) Anything that's remotely asian will be cheaper at Ranch 99.
2) Anything that you could only find in the specialty/international aisle at Safeway will be WAY cheaper at Ranch.  Stock up there.
3) Stick to Safeway for American brands.

Here's a comparison of just a few items that are cheaper at Ranch.

Items that always seem to be on sale at Ranch:
- 15lb bag of rice: $11.99 (at Sfwy: $18.98 for only 10lbs)
- Tofu package: 89¢ each (at Sfwy: $1.25 or more)
- Canned coconut milk 79¢ each (at Sfwy: $1.50 or more)

Normally priced items at Ranch:
- Red peppers: $1.49/lb (at Sfwy: $1.99 normal price)
- Portabella mushrooms ~99¢ each (at Sfwy: $1.99 each)

Ranch stores are all over California, and apparently also in WA, NV, and TX.  Locations

Finally, a warning.  They have lots of very fresh meats and seafood, but if you are used to Safeway packaging and animal-food abstraction like me, it can be a bit scary!  Fortunately, I've always found that Ranch rewards the adventurous ;)  Happy shopping!
